My Soil Farsh فرش : Iteration 3

(Place, as Guest)

EXHIBITED
2026 Redlands Art Gallery

MEDIUM
55 kgs red-loamy-clay soil (hand-ground and sieved through silk)

My Soil Farsh is a durational experiment in community building that began in 2022. It is grounded in the Iranian sensibility that the ancient Farsh (Persian carpet) is not merely an object or piece of furniture, but a vital cultural tool that creates the containment and intimacy required for the togetherness many—including myself—are yearning for.

Iteration 3: Place, as Guest marks a shift from engaging with place symbolically—through tools, cultural connections, and community-building—towards learning how to approach place as a guest. Held as a period of learning and pause, the work sits with questions of responsibility that require time, listening, and relationship.

Fragmented and unresolved, the Farsh reflects this pause and the project’s shifting relationship to place.

Iteration 3 centres on conversations about place on Quandamooka Country, from where the soil was offered. The work acknowledges cultural knowledge generously shared by Avril Quaill (Director of QUAMPI Arts & Culture Centre), and Joshua Walker (Senior Quandamooka Song-man), who hosted the artist on Country as part of a learning and sharing experience.
